Boxer (flat) engines can experience faster piston ring and cylinder wall wear than inline engines due to gravity causing oil to drain away from the bottom of the cylinders, leading to "dry starts" and uneven friction. Their horizontal orientation means the piston sides constantly rest on the cylinder walls, which, combined with higher operating temperatures and potential for oil burning, can accelerate wear on rings and cylinder bores over time.
