I hate to be the one to keep making comparisons but we kinda have to make one here, John Cena in his prime faced literally the exact same problem when he was put as the face of the company, the adult section of the fan base begged for Cena to turn heel especially during the PG era, the issue was he was the company’s biggest star, merch seller, etc. to the point where when they were legit going to make him heel in 2012 after losing to the rock, they got cold feet because they knew A: fans would get behind him instead of turn against him, and B: they’d potentially lose their biggest money maker. I think Cody still has time to turn heel though, he has more reason to compared to Cena, literally nearly everyone he looked up to and trusted betrayed him and the fans are turning on him too, it’s gonna be interesting to see where his character goes from here

WWE hasn’t made a legitimate heel outside of Gunther… and even his storylines are pretty boring. The separation between heel and face would be better if they improved their storytelling. Randy has so many memorable heel moments like the punt kicks, RKOing women and men, and many other things… so this made sense, over Cody who hasn’t had any storyline to help with an entertaining turn. Last time WWE made a legitimate heel turn entertaining was Cena to then fumble it. This was the right call, Randy needs to go over though for Cody to build to a heel turn.

I don’t think they should turn Cody heel until they’ve built up a babyface that’s good enough and they haven’t done that yet. They didn’t even do it when Roman was heel, everyone was made to look like a jobber

For all of WWE's faults, I think this entire situation shows a bigger problem in general: the fans have made it impossible to have a true 100% heel. WWE can't create a main event heel that gets boo'd out the building because the fans cheer them everytime. The only reason Dom worked is because people hated him as a face with Rey already. Turning huge babyfaces heel doesn't have the payoff it used to and runs the risk of ruining every other babyface put against them by having them boo'd.
