Day one of our Namibian 4x4 overland adventure started with the practical stuff—learning the 4x4s, figuring out the radios, getting the rooftop tents sorted out, and trying to remember who was supposed to do what without looking too confused. After some last-minute shopping and a whole lot of getting everybody rolling, we headed out for Okonjima Nature Reserve. The drive itself was only a few hours, but between the vehicle handoff, the shopping, the gear, and getting a whole convoy pointed in the same direction, it was about 2:00 before we rolled into Camp Chilala, our first camp in Namibia. By 3:00, we had wrestled our rooftop tents into place and gotten camp set up. Not bad for a bunch of rooftop tent greenhorns, if I do say so myself. Good thing, too, because there was no time to waste—our first game drive pickup was at 4:00. Let the wildlife viewing begin. Camp Chilala sits in Okonjima Nature Reserve, home of the AfriCat Foundation, which works to help secure a future for Namibia’s large carnivores. Okonjima is especially known for tracking collared leopards, so naturally, we had high hopes. So yes, day one involved dust, gear, radios, rooftop tents, and a little bit of figuring-it-out as we went—but that’s half the fun. And before the afternoon was over, we were already out looking for wildlife. Next up: our first game drive. Come along for the ride. Long live the wild. #overlanding #overland #4x4 #namibia #namibiantiktoker🇳🇦
