@productof_ny: Sitting in the middle of the Bay of Kotor, just off the historic coastal town of Perast, is one of the most unusual islands in Europe. The wild part? It didn’t exist until sailors started building it themselves. According to local legend, two sailors discovered an icon of the Virgin Mary resting on a rock here in the 1400s after surviving a storm. From that point on, every time someone made it back safely from sea, they would drop a stone at that exact spot as a sign of gratitude. The pile slowly grew until it eventually became the tiny island we see today, home to the church of Our Lady of the Rocks. Even today the tradition continues. Every summer locals celebrate the Fašinada festival, rowing out to the island and tossing new stones into the water to help maintain it. Whether the legend is completely true or not, the result is pretty incredible — a man-made island built from centuries of sailors’ superstition, gratitude, and persistence.
