It all started on the first Sunday I decided to attend church at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State. At the time, I had just been given the title of Freshers’ President, and somehow, this random person was appointed as my assistant. We exchanged contacts that Sunday, and honestly, that was where I thought it would end. We didn’t chat on WhatsApp. We didn’t call each other. We barely knew each other. It wasn’t until the next couple of Sundays, when we had a meeting and were given the task of compiling the names of freshers, that we actually started talking. Since I was the president, I had to pass the assignment on to my assistant, and that simple task became the beginning of a friendship I never expected. From there, we gradually became close. Then closer. Before we knew it, we were always together at church. Every Sunday, we sat together. If you saw one of us, there was a very high chance the other person wasn’t far away. And, of course, people started talking. “Ah! These two are dating.” “They are boyfriend and girlfriend.” “They have already started dating.” We kept telling everyone, “We are not dating. There is absolutely nothing going on between us.” Nobody believed us. At some point, we just gave up trying to explain ourselves. We figured, if people wanted to think whatever they wanted, they should go ahead and think it. Then, somehow, the narrative changed. People started saying we were brother and sister. And that was when we looked at ourselves properly and realized, “Wait… we actually look alike somehow!” 😂 So we accepted the title. We became brother and sister—not by blood, but by the kind of bond that made the name feel real. And honestly, Isaac has been a brother to me in every sense of the word. There were times I would go hungry, and somehow, this boy would show up for me like a real brother. There were times I found myself in difficult situations and needed someone to help me out, and Isaac was always there. I remember one particular situation when I was in serious trouble and needed money urgently. I called him, and he told me he didn’t have the money. I thought that was the end of it. But instead, he went somewhere else and borrowed the money from someone just to give it to me. He borrowed money on my behalf so I could get myself out of that situation. And the funny thing is, till today, I haven’t paid that money back. 😂 Yet, he never came to disturb me about it. He never made me feel guilty about it. He simply helped me because I needed help. That is the kind of person Isaac has been to me. His real name is actually Emmanuel, but because of the stereotypes and all the funny energy surrounding the name “Emmanuel” in our environment, I decided I wasn’t going to call him that. Instead, I started calling him by his father’s name—Isaac. And somehow, I became the only person in Ekpoma who called him Isaac. 😂 From that little beginning, our friendship grew into something I will always be grateful for. We remained close throughout school, through good times and difficult times, all the way to my graduation. Even when I was going through one of the toughest periods of my life, Isaac came through for me again. Looking back now, I realize that sometimes, God places certain people in our lives without giving us any explanation at the beginning. You meet someone randomly, exchange contacts, and think nothing of it. Then, with time, that person becomes family. That is what Isaac became to me. I may not have the perfect words to describe what our relationship means to me, but I know this much: I am deeply grateful. Grateful for every time he showed up. Grateful for every time he helped me. Grateful for every time he treated me like his sister. Grateful for being able to call someone my brother, not because we share the same parents, but because we share something just as beautiful—the bond of genuine love, care, and friendship. Isaac, thank you for being more than a friend to me. Thank you for being a brother. God bless you #signout
