I question whether its really about the engineers not caring about the mechanics. I might hypothesize that it's the opposite: They're making simple repairs (1) too complex for the owners to do themselves and (2) designing repairs to be so tedious that a simple bulb replacement or oil change requires 3 hours of billable labor, getting more money from the owner as cost of ownership.

I can admit the ranger does indeed have the oil filter in the wheel well but what’s nice is they put a rail to move the oil that falls out to under the frame of the truck
