Friedrich Nietzsche was born on 15 October 1844 in Röcken, Prussia, into a religious family. His father, Carl Ludwig Nietzsche, was a Lutheran pastor who died when Friedrich was only four years old. Nietzsche was raised mainly by his mother, sister, and other female relatives. He showed exceptional intelligence from a young age and studied classical languages and literature. He attended the University of Bonn and later the University of Leipzig, where he developed a deep interest in philosophy. In 1869, at just 24, he became a professor of classical philology at the University of Basel in Switzerland. Nietzsche's early friendship with composer Richard Wagner strongly influenced him, but the two eventually became estranged. Nietzsche gradually rejected Christianity and traditional morality, arguing that people should create their own values. His famous works include Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Beyond Good and Evil, The Genealogy of Morality, and The Birth of Tragedy. His philosophy introduced influential ideas such as the “Übermensch” (higher human), the “will to power,” and the declaration that “God is dead.” His writings challenged conventional ideas about religion, morality, truth, and human existence. Nietzsche suffered from severe health problems throughout his life, including migraines and declining eyesight. In 1889, he suffered a mental breakdown in Turin, Italy. He spent his final years under the care of his mother and later his sister, unable to continue his philosophical work. Friedrich Nietzsche died on 25 August 1900, in Weimar, Germany, at the age of 55. His ideas later became enormously influential in philosophy, literature, psychology, and modern intellectual thought.
