Tsurugajo Castle, also known as Aizu-Wakamatsu Castle, is one of Fukushima Prefecture’s most iconic landmarks. The original fortress on this site was first built in 1384, later expanded and rebuilt into a major stronghold during the feudal era. Its striking multi-layered design reflects the elegance of traditional Japanese castle architecture. 🏯 The castle is best known for its dramatic role in the Boshin War (1868-1869). During the Battle of Aizu, it served as the final defensive bastion of the Aizu domain. Despite enduring about a month of continuous artillery bombardment, its structure remained standing - a testament to the impressive engineering of the Edo-period fortress. ⚔️ After the war, however, the original keep was demolished in 1874. In 1965, the castle tower was rebuilt using modern materials, faithfully recreating its historical appearance. A major renovation in 2011 restored the castle’s distinctive red-tiled roof, a rare and beautiful feature among Japanese castles. In winter, the crimson tiles contrasted with snow create one of Aizu’s most picturesque sights. 🛡️❄️ Today, Tsurugajo functions as a museum, displaying samurai armor, weapons, and artifacts that illuminate the history of the Aizu clan. Every spring, more than a thousand cherry trees around the castle burst into bloom, drawing visitors from across Japan and around the world. 🌸 Tsurugajo Castle stands not only as a place of beauty, but as a lasting symbol of Aizu’s resilience, loyalty, and cultural pride.
