Luther Kising During His UPNG Days Back in his UPNG days, Luther Kising was known as a humble and devoted Christian young man. He served as the TSCF President and was respected by many students as a God-fearing leader. He often led worship sessions, and many believed he had a genuine desire to serve God and the student community. Later, he stepped down as TSCF President and contested for the UPNG SRC Presidency. Because students already knew him as a Christian leader, many trusted him and voted for him. He won the election and became SRC President. However, 2023 became a major test of his leadership, character and principles. Universities across PNG took part in protests and boycotts over issues concerning the Marape Government and the Pukpuk Treaty involving the United States and PNG. Many student leaders around the country stood together and spoke out. Because of Luther's Christian background and the trust students had placed in him, many expected him to stand for truth, accountability and transparency. Instead, he chose not to support the protests and supported the government's position on the treaty. For many people, this was the moment they felt he had failed to live up to the leadership principles they expected from him. Some who once respected and trusted him became disappointed and walked away. They felt that his decisions were influenced more by political interests and personal benefits than by the principles he once stood for. His story is a reminder that being a Christian leader does not automatically make a person immune to temptation. A person can start with good intentions but later become distracted by power, money, popularity or political influence. The real test of leadership is not how a person begins, but whether they remain faithful to their principles when power, money and pressure come their way. Leadership is about standing for what is right, even when it is difficult.
