@rodneysfishtank: In this clip you can see me feeding romaine lettuce to the cichlids. Many people are surprised by this, but leafy greens can be a very valuable addition to the diet of large cichlids. Romaine lettuce provides fiber, minerals and plant compounds that support digestion and overall health. In the wild even strongly predatory cichlids constantly ingest plant material, algae and detritus while foraging. This natural mix supports the intestinal microbiome and helps stabilize digestion. A balanced gut environment is one of the key factors in preventing intestinal problems that many aquarists know, such as flagellates or hole-in-the-head disease. A varied diet that includes plant material can therefore strengthen the immune system and improve overall health and vitality of the fish. However, not every species accepts green food. Species like Parachromis dovii or Parachromis managuensis often refuse plant material completely. In those cases there is another simple approach. You can feed insects such as mealworms or grasshoppers that have been gut loaded with vegetables beforehand. The insects process the plant material and the fish receive those nutrients indirectly. In the end it is always about diversity in the diet. The closer we come to the natural variety of food sources, the healthier and more resilient our fish tend to be. 🥬 #cichlids #lettuce #omnivore #aquarium #monsterfish
