@thearchivedhistory: Convict Leasing After the Civil War, freed people emerged without land, wages, or legal protection, and Southern legislatures enacted Black Codes that criminalized ordinary behavior to control labor and movement. These laws made arrests easy for vague offenses—vagrancy, loitering, failure to sign labor contracts—so local courts and sheriffs could supply convict labor to private employers. The Thirteenth Amendment outlawed slavery except as punishment for crime, and that exception became the legal hinge for a new system of coercion: arrest, conviction on minor charges, and transfer to labor contractors. States then leased convicted people to railroads, mines, plantations, and corporations in a system known as convict leasing. Lessees paid the state for labor but provided little oversight or care. Prisoners earned little or no pay and worked in brutal, often deadly, conditions. Because lessees had no incentive to preserve workers’ lives, mortality and injury rates were high, and leased convicts were treated as expendable property rather than human laborers. What’s crazy too is that schools barely give any explanation to us about this disgrace in grade school. Going to college is really where I got my knowledge on how bad it was… and even then it was probably worse 😀
