The storms in our life are not a report card from Heaven or a lack of evidence that God exists. Jesus said that God the Father makes the sun rise on the evil AND the good. He sends rain on the just AND the unjust. Scripture is beautiful when you read and study it because you start to see double meanings and patterns, is our faith in God conditional? But when you look at Matthew 5:45, you realize that God doesn't withhold Sun or Rain from anyone, so if he is unconditional in His blessings, shouldn't we be when we bless others? The clear-as-day reason why Jesus says this, is found a few verses before and after. It's all about loving your enemies. He says LOVE THEM as God does. Most fathers want their child to take after them. Many fathers will teach their children wrong in this life by leading their children to hate their enemies (
The storms in our life are not a report card from Heaven or a lack of evidence that God exists. Many fathers will teach their children wrong in this life by leading their children to hate their enemies ("If someone punches you, punch them back harder.") ... Well, Jesus says do the opposite and models it after God the Father. If evil people can receive the same sunshine in their lives as righteous people, why are we to be hypocrites and fight against hate with hate? It's easy to hate someone in general. It shouldn't be easy to hate someone who loves us, but we still do that! But it can be real hard to love someone who hates you. But here's what loving your enemies is NOT... It's not letting them walk over you. It's not pretending the hurt didn't happen. It's not staying in a situation that damages you. Jesus loved everyone and still He spoke hard truths. He walked away from people who refused to receive him. Loving your enemy means you don't let what they did turn you into something you're not. You don't repay evil with evil. You don't let their hate become your hate. You release them, not for their sake, but because holding on only poisons you internally. Romans 12:19 says vengeance belongs to God. That means its not yours to carry. So, love them from a distance if you have to. Pray for them even when it hurts. Wish them well and mean it. That's not weakness, that's the hardest thing a human being can do. And its exactly what your Father does every single day for people who don't even acknowledge him.
