On the US, as with so many things, racism also played a major role. In the early 20th, Whites feared having to subsidize Blacks so they rejected Universal Healthcare-- once again cutting of their nose to spite their face. We see this repeated again and again with public goods.

US healthcare I feel is based more on the greed for money and less on helping people. As a Norwegian I have a hard time understanding why because it should be less about money and more about helping people to get well.

I am German, lived in the US for many years, raised my kids there. When my ex husband lost his job, health insurance was gone too. I have a kid with a chronic auto immune disorder, that could have become acute at any time, needing extended hospital care, which we could have never afforded on our own. I bought a plan called "catastrophic" on the open market (which was extremely difficult to find with a pre-existing condition), subsidized by Obama Care. A few months later we moved back to Europe, entered universal healthcare here and I slept for the first time in over a year. The stress, knowing, that you could lose everything when somebody in the family gets seriously ill, or not being able to provide your kid with the care it needs, is unimaginable. Great breakdown of the different systems and their origins and so good to see you again.

Employee based health insurance also benefits employers as employees are trapped. The system is so hard to change here because the US is an oligarchy partially run by those companies who need to exploit workers

One thing I’ve seen, especially after Covid, is cutting costs at the patients expense. I think most healthcare worker are giving their best and I have the highest respect for them. It’s that the system has some major issues right now.

I would say it primarily due to the money — and that ranges from the hight cost of and artificially low numbers of med school, to insane profit motives of insurance companies, to medicine prices, etc
