Math becomes totally alien post linear algebra and calculus. Like sometimes I try to talk about the concepts we learned in class to people but theres so much jargon in pure math its incomprehensible to the average layperson. Plus to major in math you have to be a special type of person who can handle precise, unambiguous proofs. Its a type of study where there is no grey area and your proof is either totally correct or totally false. You also have to be comfortable with working with abstract structures you cannot even mentally imagine. Its a wild ride thats for sure! 😁

Okay so I also was a math major that pivoted and I actually liked all the abstract classes and struggled with all the classes you liked haha. I feel like the theoretical classes they expected you to need time on so they were more patient but the applied it was just problem set after problem set and even if you could figure out the answer eventually it was more important to be able to solve them quickly

Also, at my school the math degree has a ton of flexibility. Once you reach a certain point you just need upper level math classes, so you can take the stuff you like or is more applicable to your career

I’m not sure if your research department has to pay for licenses, but SciLab and Octave have extremely similar syntax as MATLAB, but are completely free. I really struggled with the group theory concepts in abstract algebra 😅😅

At my school Real Analysis was very proof and theory heavy and our linear algebra was computational so it didn’t end up being that bad
