i understand the concept of "return to sender", but what exactly does that look like? how does one actually practice that when in a situation? do we say something, do we walk away, do we just look back silently?

I was the same. once I saw Darvo it was no longer their game. i used facts, video evidence and stopped the diversion. question is X , divert. ok I answered your diversion now answer question x, divert. ok I answered your diversion now answer question x, divert. The one I was with used strategies like being cold or distant or doing or saying something I had told them would hurt me just to make me react. Their strategy was different. It was subtle... to make me react & paint me as the problem.
