He grabbed a medical bag and jumped in his Honda Civic, tracing the sound down a winding slope of Memory Lane until he reached the turnoff from Highway 84. There, beneath a thick canopy of coastal redwoods, he saw the wreckage of a head-on collision: A Tesla Model Y with a crumpled front bumper, parked haphazardly across the lanes with smoke wafting everywhere. The other car, a Honda, had nearly careened off the road from the impact. That crash on the afternoon of Aug. 30 was the sixth Krempetz said he has witnessed this year on roads surrounding his hometown of La Honda, a sleepy, unincorporated community in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Since then, he said he’s seen two more. What was once a hippie haunt has become a destination for car enthusiasts and influencers who swarm in on weekends, driving at breathtaking speeds along each hairpin turn of the highway. The result is a collision course between groups who are drawn to the same idyllic, undulating landscape — but for very different purposes. On several occasions, Krempetz has set out flares at some catastrophic scene, as he did on Aug. 30. He’s grown accustomed to parking behind police lines, making awkward small talk with other bystanders, peering over the ridgeline to see a battered vehicle stuck in a canyon. One woman, Karyn Ellis, started making lawn signs and bumper stickers to express her frustration. “Highway 84,” the signs say, “not your racetrack.” “In the last three years we’ve had six locals hit by the hobby-racing motorcycle-car community,” Ellis said. “Of those, two are dead.
