For three years, Lena Schuett and Miu Taechamongkalapiwat had built a quiet life together. They lived in the same apartment. Shared Sunday mornings over burnt toast and coffee. Argued over whose turn it was to do the laundry. Talked about marriage as if it were only a matter of when, never if. People often joked that they were the perfect legal couple. Lena was a prosecutor. Miu was a criminal defense lawyer. Opposite sides of the courtroom. The same side at home. It had always worked. Until one case made them question everything they believed in. Lena's younger brother, Liam, was found dead in an alley just before dawn. The entire country followed the story. The police arrested a suspect within forty-eight hours. The media called it an open-and-shut case. To Lena... It wasn't just another file. It was her little brother. Three days later, Miu was called into the managing partner's office. A thick folder was pushed across the desk.

"High-profile homicide," her boss said. "You're lead counsel." Miu glanced at the name. Her blood ran cold. "...Sir." "I can't take this case." "You can." "My partner is the victim's sister." "I know." Miu looked up. "Then you know this is a conflict." "The court doesn't see it that way." "My judgment will be questioned." "Then prove your judgment can't be bought." She clenched the folder tighter. "There are other defense attorneys." "There are." "But this client requested the firm's best." "And that's you." Silence. "You don't have a choice, Miu." That evening, Miu sat in her car for almost an hour. She rehearsed the conversation a hundred different ways. None of them sounded right. When she finally opened the apartment door, Lena was in the kitchen. "There you are," Lena smiled weakly. "I made dinner." Miu couldn't smile back. Lena noticed immediately. "...What's wrong?" Miu placed the case file on the table. "I need to tell you something." Lena wiped her hands on a dish towel. "What happened?" Miu looked at the folder. Then at Lena. "My firm assigned me a homicide case today." "...Okay." "It's Liam's." The smile disappeared from Lena's face. "...What do you mean?" "I'm the defense counsel." Silence. "So... you accepted it?" "I didn't." Lena frowned. "What?" "It was assigned to me." "I asked to be removed." "They refused." "And you stayed?" Miu's voice was barely above a whisper. "I took an oath, Lena." Lena stared at her. "So did I." Neither spoke. The apartment, once filled with laughter, suddenly felt too small. Finally, Lena asked the question she was afraid to hear the answer to. "Do you believe he's innocent?" Miu took a slow breath. "I don't know." "I haven't read all the evidence." "And I won't decide before the trial does." Lena's eyes filled with tears. "That's my brother." "I know." "My brother is dead." "I know." "And you're going to stand in court..." "...and fight for the man accused of killing him." Miu closed her eyes. "I'm going to fight for a fair trial." Lena stepped back as if the words had physically struck her. "Sometimes I wonder if you love the law more than you love me." Miu didn't answer. Because for the first time in three years... She didn't know which answer would hurt Lena less. The next morning, Lena woke up alone. Miu had already left for work. The coffee on the counter had gone cold. A small sticky note sat beside it. "Eat breakfast. Please." Lena crumpled it without thinking. From that day on, they stopped talking like lovers. Every conversation sounded like cross-examination. "Will you be home tonight?" "I don't know." "Do you have dinner plans?" "I'll eat at the office." "Are you avoiding me?" "I'm avoiding this fight." Then the prosecution formally announced its lead counsel. Lena. The courtroom buzzed. "The victim's sister?" "Can she stay objective?" "It's going to be a media circus." Lena didn't care. She wasn't stepping down. She knew every prosecutor in the office had advised against it. Continuation ⬇️
