Some attorneys have told me that some attorneys go into big law for a year or two just to pay off their debt and then transition to the area of law of their choosing

a lot of schools give full rides !! it may not be your DREAM school but graduating debt free is a huge weight off your shoulders and gives you flexibility to not NEED a biglaw salary.

Graduated law school in 2013. Husband and I had 215k between undergrad and law school (we both went). We made a combined salary of 90k when we started working, slowly made more. I worked as a prosecutor (the reason I went to law school). He was at a small, start up firm. Took us 5.5 years to pay it all (304k after interest). But we lived well under our means for those years.

It was a lot. Early mornings, late nights. Sometimes I wouldn’t even know how I would make it. I would starve at times. Finally it paid off. Mind you, it’s one of the best schools. Nothing ever beats this feeling. Proud grad of the University of TikTok School of Law.

If you work as a public defender for 10 years (or do public service of any sort) you can get loan forgiveness if you have federal loans

Start law school in August and picked a really low ranked school because they gave me an insane scholarship so I’m only paying $7k / year (plus rent and cost of living).

Once you graduate, you will typically have a choice between a 10-year repayment plan and a 25-year plan. The 10-year plan has higher monthly payments but is usually much cheaper overall. The 25-year plan lowers your monthly payments, but you will pay significantly more in interest, often close to doubling the original loan amount.
Be sure to read the details carefully. Some longer-term plans offer loan forgiveness after 25 years, but the forgiven amount is often treated as taxable income. That can leave you with a large tax bill that many people end up financing with another loan.
If you can afford it, the 10-year plan is generally the better option. You will save on interest, and you can always make extra payments to pay it off faster. No one explained this to me, so I hope it’s helpful!

My partner has been out of school 10 years. He still owes $250,000 and that is all law school. His undergrad was paid for.

i can’t speak for my law school debt yet, but for my loans from undergrad, I used the resident/avalanche method and have them almost halfway paid off after 2 years so I can have slightly lower debt out of law school. Applying for outside scholarships especially for 2L and 3L seems like it’ll be a big difference maker

I went to John Marshall (Now UIC Law) in the early’80s. I went at night while I taught jr high. I’d saved up by working 2 jobs the 2 years before. Probably debt free in a year.
