Valentino is a dominant male, full of presence and instinct. His growl is not an invitation to fear him, but a clear form of communication. Lions use vocalisations like this to express discomfort, protect their space, and remind others (including us) that they are still wild at heart. At Felidae, we never tease, provoke, or encourage this behaviour. In fact, we do the opposite. We step back. We give space. We respect their “off days” just like we would with any living being. Because true conservation is not about control, it’s about understanding. Valentino was born in captivity, which means he can never be released into the wild. He hasn’t learned the essential survival skills from a wild pride, and releasing him would put his life and others, at serious risk. So instead, we give him the next best thing: space, dignity, and a life where he can still express his natural behaviours safely. These moments are not about aggression, they are about communication, boundaries, and respect.
