One reason to avoid a glycine supplement is that it is usually not coming from real whole food in the first place. It is typically made through heavy industrial processing and chemical reactions, not obtained in the same natural form you would get from eating actual food. That already matters, because once you isolate a single nutrient and strip it away from its original food matrix, you also remove the endless other compounds that normally come with it, like cofactors, coenzymes, minerals, peptides, and other supportive nutrients that help the body actually use it properly. Real food is not just “glycine.” It is an entire package. A supplement is usually just one isolated piece removed from that package.
That leads into the bigger issue: the body did not evolve around taking large scoops of isolated amino acids made in factories. Humans evolved getting nutrients through whole foods and natural combinations, in amounts the body could handle and regulate. People often say you “do not get enough,” but that idea is not automatically true. If you are eating real food, your body is already getting glycine along with countless other nutrients, and it can also make glycine on its own. More is not automatically better. Once you go beyond what the body actually needs, it is no longer “fixing a deficiency.” It can just become excess.
Another problem is that glycine is only one nutrient out of what is essentially an endless number of nutrients and compounds found in natural foods. Many different foods, amino acids, minerals, peptides, and whole-food patterns can support sleep, recovery, connective tissue, and general health. So when people say glycine helps sleep, muscle growth, collagen, or gut health, that does not mean glycine supplementation is necessary. There are many natural ways to support sleep. There are many natural ways to support recovery and tissue repair. There are many natural ways to support the gut. An isolated powder is not some magical irreplaceable solution.
