My voice was a whisper, rasped through a tightening throat. The mic shook in my trembling hands as I looked up at the shrinking channel of raden inside the nodes. The panel was giving off a burning hair-dryer smell as its resin stores began to drain. I wasn't going to get another chance. I depressed the button and cried in a voice I hardly recognized. "Auxiliary badge 77258." I banged my fist on the button, then the panel. "Evacuation requested from Lightbridge Tower Two. Please, come in." I flipped every switch I saw while hot pressure built behind my eyes. "Hello? Anyone... please..." The raden power died with a final crackle. I set down the mic and backed away slowly. All the daydreams of copters flying toward me, of the city disappearing behind me like a toy model on the horizon, of Hanna's smile at the sight of me, spiderwebbed with cracks. My hopes shattered like busted glass, each shard jagged, cutting all the excitement of moments before to ribbons. Anguish bubbled deep in my chest, rising like bile. I threw an elbow over my mouth, teeth sinking into the material to gag the yell that roared up my throat. I sank to the floor, my back against one of the round-table desks, head in my hands, fingers pulling at my tangled hair until the pain in my scalp cut through some of the tumultuous thoughts. In that small slice of clarity, one surfaced from the bombarding waves of questions and theories.
