Every single person that plays pokemon go knows they were creating map information, it’s in the terms and conditions and it’s also extremely obvious that is what it is for. People who don’t play pokemon go somehow think this is new news.

Thrill Travels 🎢 :
Niantic started with Ingress to improve Google mapping. Pokemon Go was just an extension of the data collection. All the Pokemon Go locations were originally from Ingress where the players submitted the locations.

But also... Why is this bad? We got fun and activity. They got navigation and information that doesn't hurt anybody.

Hot take: this is why I would support codifying data ownership for every American’s data footprint. We are people, not commodities.

this is probably one of the best ways of sharing data, people got to play games for free in exchange for publicly available data aggregation, compared to what FB and other social media companies do with private data this is somewhere between a nothingburger to a logical model for 3rd party data sharing

Anyone who played PoGo knew this. I’d say Niantic was honorably transparent with their data collection. Yes, it’s “free” labor but it was NOT sneaky. The transaction was transparent which is actually kind of nice.

Note: most of the image stuff was optional. Also this is the real reason they hated spoofing.
