@never.run.alone: Female athletes being held to a higher standard than males?! SHOCK. @MARY MCCARTHY unpacks ‘stressy-gate’ and the feeling that she was being treated differently despite training in similar ways to male athletes around her. Full episode out now.
Injuries can happen to anyone, but it might be worth reflecting on the training approach. Racing Liverpool Cross and then London After Dark the next day, along with running 24km on the day of a flight to Australia, does not really allow for proper recovery and could increase the risk of injury.
Given that Mary presents herself as a running coach, there is perhaps a bit more responsibility around the example being set, especially when sharing training publicly. I think the difference with Hugo is that he does not encourage others to follow his approach.

Nothing to do with gender at all. If Hugo Fry had done a 50km cycle right after announcing an injury, he’d be getting the same questions

Why are we bringing gender into this? Injury and recovery aren’t gender specific, so it feels unnecessary to frame it that way. Anyone, regardless of being a man or a woman, would likely get the same reaction if they started training just 24 hours after a supposed fracture.
I don’t think most of the comments are coming from a place of hate. It seems more like concern. As an influencer, your actions naturally influence others, so when something like this is shared, it can be confusing for people watching, especially those who might follow that example.
That’s all it really comes down to.

Disagree. Let’s not make it a gender thing come on. The difference is, and respectfully.. Mary’s content comes across smug, her messaging has been tone deaf across a few things along with a few other factors. It’s nothing to do with gender. Look at that Ewan Heritage, he’s been getting some tough messages over his injury and content messaging. She hasn’t once taken accountability for it and now we are pressing the ‘if it was a man’ narrative. This isn’t running, this is toxic

It's because her content is insufferable. It's entirely self-serving (more blatantly than any of the other runfluencers), with no effort to engage with followers or 'teach' them anything. #beattheboys is the most cynical use of gender as a marketing slogan I've ever seen. A growing number of people will have been on a 'hate-follow' journey and leapt at the opportunity to have a pop for a legitimate reason.

Big difference - Mary is insufferable. Not related to gender.

What a crazy take, most of the "heat" came from female influencers who were concerned about the optics for young impressionable girls. I have unfollowed on insta

She’s supposed to be an adult. Hold yourself accountable & stop playing the gender card at every opportunity in 2026

mary has 3x the followers as hugo does and, separately, i would say that i think that people with a female-heavy audience (such as mary) are far more influential. unfortunately that leads to more negative comments when people don’t like what they see but, on the flip side, opens up more opportunities for brand deals, selling merch, etc
