@aice.socials: Shazam doesn’t actually “listen” to songs. It converts sound into a mathematical fingerprint using FFT — turning audio into a map of frequency peaks. Then it matches patterns, not sound. It’s not audio recognition. It’s geometry. That’s why it can identify a song in seconds from just 5 seconds of audio. Want more breakdowns like this? Regardless to be able to match that through millions of songs in a few seconds is pretty impressive

so it observes the pressure wave from the music (Listening) and uses the data it gets from (listening) to compare it to a dataset

Vegan Tech Guy :
saying it doesn't listen to your music is misleading, Shazam uses your phones mic to interpret the sound and then converts it into information, that's what 'listening' is, it's what we do with our ears and brain 😅

So when I sing the song INTO shazam it doesn’t work because I can’t reproduce the accurate songwaves, but when I hum into Google song search it works? So what the heck does Google song search use ??

This is not correct. It takes the unique 'fingerprint' created by listening to the song, and uses that as the key entered into the pre-made hash table, where the name of the song is the output to that 'fingerprint' being input. 'Search' is at O(1) bc it's basically instantaneous. Doesn't matter how big the database is, the method is the same.

The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is the algorithm for computing the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), while that equation/relation is the Continuous Fourier Transform.
