Personally I don’t think there’s anything boring/bleak about choosing to have a different backpacking experience! Heavy drinking & partying is super fun for some, but alternative ways to spend time can also be what people define as ‘fun’ ! The ‘perfect’ experience of backpacking is is subjective :)

I feel like travelling has changed a lot after the pandemic. I still love travelling but I don’t get the same feeling as I had travelling Latin America in my early 20s in 2016-2017. Everything is about content now. All lot of places are curated for Instagram. People stand in a line for the perfect photo but have stopped living in the moment.

I don’t knock anyone for not partying if that’s not what they want to do but the perfectly curated instagrams and tiktoks do concern me cause no wonder people struggle when that’s what they’re comparing themselves to.

Can’t speak for Oz, but similar experience in SEA…even pre-Covid compared to past few years. The difference from 2018-19 to the past few years when I’ve been back a few times is notable.

My young cousin just went to OZ. They stayed in Airbnbs the whole time. Didn’t experience hostel life at all. I felt so sorry for her. They are also using apps to meet people rather than in the common areas.

Helicopter parents aren't letting their kids go anywhere. Even as adults. Also, everything is way too expensive now.

Went to Byron in 2007 on holiday then travelling Australia the following year. It was great, no phones just internet cafes.
