@juliehelmss: This isn’t a criticism of restaurants. We all love to get out on the town sometimes. But understanding the social dynamics at play puts the power in everyone’s hands equally. In many legacy social circles, hosting signals social leadership in a way restaurants do not. Restaurants outsource the experience. Hosting requires you to curate it. The host chooses the guest list, shapes the conversation, and creates the environment where connection happens. That ability to bring the right people together is a form of social capital, built through shared experiences, cultural knowledge, and trust. Sociologists sometimes describe this through the idea of cultural capital and habitus… the subtle social cues, tastes, and behaviors that signal belonging within certain circles. Dinner parties have historically been one of the ways those circles reinforce themselves. Not through extravagance, but through curation. The host is demonstrating taste, cultural awareness, and the social leadership required to connect people meaningfully. And while this dynamic is often associated with old money circles, the skill itself isn’t limited to them. Hosting doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive. A simple dinner with the right mix of people can create far more connection than a reservation at the newest restaurant in town. The point isn’t the budget. The point is the invitation, the curation, and the connection created around the table. #hosting #habitus #dinnerparty #oldmoney #etiquette

Hosting is not for the weak. Especially if you want people to enjoy their time and be comfortable.

I used to host a lot until I noticed people never did the favor back and were looking forward to only feast at my place. And during quieter seasons all the connections I made disappeared. So I stopped spending money and effort into hosting and rather focused on interior design for self and what makes my family happy.

All social classes host at home. It isn't exclusive to luxury: and yes, it helps reinforce communities and build them. It's women's work and enables ties to be grown and knowledge to be exchanged.

My wife and I host a dinner party once a month and we don’t hold back. Custom cocktails, paired wines, coursed meals, planning takes weeks. We even forbid bringing a gift. We do all the serving and cleaning giving our guests opportunities for deep intimate conversation. We absolutely love it. Our guests get very excited for it. We all dress for the occasion and look forward to it all week 🥰 it’s our pride and joy!

I had 20 people in a small apartment and it was a potluck and people were talking and having a good time. It’s possible even with little to no money

You miss the point. When you host, you pay for everyone. When you go to a restaurant, everyone shares the bill.

old money families host dinner parties to stay in connection with their other welthy families and their significant others who would of course also be welthy, it's to keep the family in connection so that they all can benefit from each other and their young ones and generations can stay in tuned with them not loosing the connection

Hosting at home is so much more intimate than dining out. You’re not limited to ‘eating time,’ and there’s no constant check-in from a waiter. Yes, it’s more work, but if you enjoy it and don’t let the effort become an excuse, you create a far more personal and enjoyable experience.

A detail that was not mentioned is that hosting also allow you to show that you listen to your guest, one doesn’t like onions? One mentioned a specific wine they like? It gives the opportunity to show that you care without being pretentious too

We taught our kids from an early age, the value of hosting dinner parties and it wasn’t until there were in their 20s that they realized the value in this and now they are doing it themselves with their friend groups

In short, hosting is more intimate and private on a personal level but lots of work, the guests better be worth it😭

You’re right, and Anderson Cooper’s “Astor” is essentially the biography of exactly this dynamic played out across Gilded Age New York. The dinner party as social architecture. The host as curator of people, not just plates. But the part that doesn’t fit in a sixty second video is the ecosystem required before any of this is even possible. You need friends who cook, travel, who drink thoughtfully, who treat an invitation as something earned. That circle isn’t assembled. It’s grown. And in a country that requires ranch dressing on everything, this remains a beautifully niche pursuit. 🥂
