🚨🎙️ Kylian Mbappé on the letter he received from Lionel Messi during his difficult situation in China: “People sometimes ask me why I consider Messi the greatest player ever, and honestly, moments like this are part of the reason. It’s not that I dislike Cristiano Ronaldo. Cristiano was my idol growing up, and that will never change. I admired him, I watched him, and I wanted to be like him. But I think there’s a difference between admiring someone from a distance and actually getting to know them. When I first got closer to Messi, I realised there was something very special about him. He doesn’t care who you support, whose shirt you wear or whether you grew up idolising his biggest rival. He treats you the same way. He’s so humble, he doesn’t talk much, but when he does something for you, you understand that it comes from a genuine place. That’s something I’ve always respected about him. Actually, I’m going through a very difficult period right now. Everything happening in China has been affecting me more than I wanted to admit. Even when I’m at training, I sometimes find it difficult to concentrate. There’s so much going on outside football that I can’t really switch off. Recently, I spoke to Mourinho and asked if I could take a day off because I wasn’t feeling mentally ready to train. Thankfully, he understood. I remember getting back to my car and checking my phone. I saw a message from Messi, and I was genuinely surprised. I wasn’t expecting him to reach out, especially because we don’t speak every day. But he had been following what was happening and wanted to check on me. He told me he had seen everything surrounding the situation in China and understood how difficult it must be for me. He also said he knew I never intended to hurt anybody and hoped everything would be resolved soon. But what really touched me was that he didn’t just send a message about the controversy. He wanted me to know that he was there for me. And then he said something I’ll remember for a long time. He told me not to let everything get into my head, not to overthink things, and that if I ever needed any help, I shouldn’t hesitate to text him. Honestly, that meant a lot. I was already emotional reading the message because I wasn’t expecting that kind of support. This is Messi, someone who has achieved practically everything in football, someone who doesn’t need to get involved in my personal problems, yet he took the time to make sure I was okay. I replied and thanked him because I didn’t want him to think I took that gesture for granted. I’ll never forget it. And perhaps that’s something people don’t always see when they talk about Messi. They see the footballer, the trophies and everything he’s achieved, but there’s also a person behind all of that. For me, what he did during this period says a lot about the kind of man he is. Cristiano will always be my childhood idol, but I don’t have to dislike Messi because of that. If anything, knowing him has made me appreciate him even more.”
