@belovedcabin: Can solar panels go bad? This panel was given to us almost 10 years ago and has been sitting around doing absolutely nothing. Today we finally hooked it up… and it still works. Most solar panels last 25+ years. They don’t usually suddenly fail. They just slowly lose a little efficiency over time. Pretty amazing for something that just sits in the sun all day. The biggest thing is just keeping them clean so they can work at their best. Most of our panels are actually used ones we found on Facebook Marketplace or refurbished ones from Amazon. That’s one of the ways we save money instead of buying brand new panels. If you buy used panels, just make sure: • there are no cracks in the glass • the cells aren’t damaged • and test them with a voltage meter before buying. If it’s showing around 90% of the panel’s rated voltage, it’s usually still in great shape. Solar doesn’t have to cost a fortune if you’re willing to get a little scrappy with it. ☀️
