It’s not down to everybody else to pay for your kids.

The system provides a contribution to the cost of raising children. Do you think the state should cover everything?

Should be lucky you get some free child care, isn’t really up to government to pay for it. Wasn’t in when my kids were younger, it came out of my wage.

Childcare costs, limited leave and stagnant wages mean people are genuinely struggling to afford children, and that’s exactly why birth rates are falling — not because people are irresponsible, but because they’re thinking ahead. The “if you can’t afford them, don’t have them” line ignores the reality that the economic model families used to rely on no longer exists, while society still depends on the next generation to keep everything running. In short: people are making rational choices in an irrational system, and the consequences are now showing up in the numbers.

And yet I’ve seen comments that I’m wasting my life by working and not having kids. It’s a no win situation as you are dammed if you have em but are dammed by others if you don’t

Consider yourself lucky if you get 9 months paid, I would only get stat! Hence why we’re not having kids, simply could not survive on 1 persons salary

Having children isn’t just a life choice it’s a financial choice as well. People need to plan that aspect into having children.

people missing the point the government expects you to work but there is no provisions for childcare during school holidays especially hard when you have little family or family members are also working

28 years ago when I had my first - 6 weeks paid maternity leave no tax credits or any help with childcare. I get it’s hard and expensive at times but what would it be like without the funding and paid maternity leave? I couldn’t afford childcare for my children so became a childminder instead. Now I’m on the other side of it with the government in paying us for certain age groups and dictating our businesses to us. X
