@romania: Hungry for spectacle? Somewhere out there, a resort sells you the fantasy: breakfast with giraffes, a perfectly staged tableau where long necks glide past your coffee cup and cameras click like insects in the heat. It is charming, sure, but it is also a performance. Romania plays a different game. Sit down in a village yard with a crust of bread, a slab of telemea, tomatoes that still taste like soil and sunlight, and you may discover that the countryside here does not stage the moment. It simply lets it happen. Across the rural sprawl of Transylvania, Bucovina or Maramureș, breakfast rarely needs marketing. The yard itself is the theatre: a crooked wooden table, plum trees throwing patient shade, a gate creaking somewhere down the lane. Chickens patrol the territory like petty officials, a dog sprawls with bureaucratic indifference, and every now and then a donkey wanders close with the slow confidence of someone who believes your bread might very well belong to him. No brochures promised it, no ticket was sold for the encounter. Yet there it is. Perhaps that is the quiet trick Romania still holds onto. While other places choreograph wildlife for the perfect photograph, the villages here keep life unscripted, stubbornly ordinary and therefore strangely magical. One morning you sit down alone, the next a pair of curious eyes and twitching ears lean over the fence, wondering about your breakfast as if you were the visitor in their world.
