Why do we need silent letters in English? There are several reasons why we have and need ‘silent letters’ in English! The main ‘job’ of the English spelling system is to communicate meaning! One of the main reasons unpronounced letters occur in words is to help us make etymological connections (meaning connections) to other words in that word family. These letters are referred to as ⭐️etymological markers⭐️ …basically a letter or group of letters that do not represent a phoneme (sound) in a word, but remain part of the spelling to help us make meaningful connections to related words. 🔗 The word ‘people’ comes from the same word family as population and populate, both of which contain a clearly pronounced ‘o’. 🔗 We can connect the word ‘muscle’ to muscular…where the C is clearly pronounced. 🔗 The ‘n’ in damn not only differentiates it from the homophone dam, but also signals its connection with the word damnation (notice the ‘n’ is clearly pronounced). 🔗 The ‘i’ in friend is there to show the etymological connection to Friday, which derives directly from the Anglo Saxon patron goddess of friendship. #teachers #LearnOnTikTok #earlyliteracy #spelling #english #earlyliteracy #funfact #morphology #tipsforteachers
