thank you for this transparency. you show the happy side of coop all the time, which is great, but knowing this makes me feel more connected since my 19mo can be a monster at times!

as an early educator, there’s a few things we do to keep the tantrums to a minimum. the first is what you said with making things a game, especially if you can incorporate their interests/hobbies. the second is giving as much choice as possible. this looks like “it’s time to eat! do you want the red bowl or the blue bowl?” or in the car seat situation: “it’s time to get in the car. which toy do you want to hold once you get strapped in?”. they’re craving autonomy so much at 2, so when they can’t choose what they do, it helps if they can choose how they do it. the last is “first next then” statements, which help with what you were saying about predictably. in your case it could sound like “first we sit, next we buckle up, then we get our toy” or even “first buckle, then toy”. it helps a lot to give these statements at every step along the way of transitions so that everyone is on the same page. tantrums happen, but i can tell from the positivity you guys have that coop will catch on quick. I hope this helps!

You didn’t ask for advice, I know. If you think Coop can rationalize this, try it. Tell him you’re going some place fun; somewhere he loves IF he gets in the car seat nicely. If he puts up a fuss, go back in the house. “Oh no! So sad! You didn’t get in the car seat nicely. Maybe next time!” Don’t give in. Stay home. Usually only takes once.

I have no children of my own but I have worked with kids but I reccomend bringing his seat inside and letting cooper buckle a baby or stuffed animal into the seat or even buckling himself. I find if I say you do it or I do it they like the option of picking but the task is still getting done either way!

My son is going through the car seat issue. Doesn’t work all the time but we encourage him to buckle himself and give lots of excitement and praise when he does. we are setting it up for him to click in so it is safe and proper

Perhaps giving him advance notice of 30 minutes or so, about going somewhere before you need to get him in the seat. And advance notice when it’s time to get dressed. It gives his brain time to process and plan for the day ahead.

All 3 of mine did the car seat tantrum. We said no car seat you can’t come. Leave him home with mom and have him watch you leave. He will get in seat next time without any issue

I've raised 4 former toddlers....just goes to show...you can be the king of the stoop/internet....but a toddler is gonna toddler. Patience, routine, consistency, and love...can't go wrong 💙

we had a basket of toys in the center of the backseat that were car only toys. that was a huge help. those toys were special, for car rides only.

No advice, just here to say we have a 2 year old and 2 month old and are in such a similar boat🩵 this too shall pass, we’re all just doing our best!
