The waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans do mix, but they don't do it instantly or uniformly. * The "Border" Visual: You may have seen videos showing a clear line between light and dark blue water. This is usually a halocline, caused by differences in salinity (saltiness), temperature, and density. It looks like a wall, but it is actually a transition zone. * The Location: This phenomenon is most famous at Cape Horn (the Drake Passage), where the two oceans meet. The intense currents and different water properties make the mixing process slow and visible on the surface. * Why it happens: Think of it like oil and vinegar or cream in coffee. Eventually, they mix, but if the properties (like salt content from melting glaciers) are very different, they stay separated for a while before turbulence and deep-sea currents eventually blend them together. In short: They mix constantly, but because the ocean is so vast and the water properties are so different, they don't always look like a single, homogenous liquid.
