As the tyrannical government of Washington proved itself a threat to the heritage, liberties and livelihood of the southern states of the United States of America, these states, of whom many had seen some of the greatest and most decisive fighting of the war for independence merely a century before, saw it fit to declare themselves independent of Washington. “I am with the South, in death, in victory, or defeat… these people have been my friends and have stood up to me on all occasions. In addition to this, I believe the North is about to wage a brutal and unholy war on a people who have done them no wrong, in violation of the constitution and the fundamental principles of government. They no longer acknowledge that all government derives validity from the consent of the governed.” - Patrick Cleburne Although the southern states went on to lose the war, they fought nobly and valiantly, defying the odds time and time again until it could no longer hold. Many heroes rose to the occasion to defend their home with whom their loyalties lie, and many of them would lay down their lives in this defence. They did more than can be reasonably expected of them, and they will be remembered, like their ancestors a century before, as defenders of their home, and as among the foremost heroes of their countrymen.
