En junio de 1945, durante la fase final de la Batalla de Luzón, la 6.ª División de Infantería del Ejército de EE. UU. avanzó hacia el Valle de Cagayán por las carreteras 4 y 5. En el terreno selvático y montañoso, los soldados utilizaron los tanques M4 Sherman como cobertura móvil mientras estos abrían camino con fuego de ametralladoras y cañones de 75 mm contra francotiradores, cuevas fortificadas y posiciones japonesas. Las fuerzas estadounidenses se enfrentaron al Grupo Shobu, dirigido por el general Tomoyuki Yamashita, además de restos de la 2.ª División de Tanques japonesa y otras unidades atrincheradas. Tras intensos combates, entre finales de junio y agosto de 1945, la 6.ª División logró asegurar el valle, cortar las líneas de suministro japonesas y obligar a las fuerzas enemigas restantes a retirarse hacia las montañas del norte de Luzón. In June 1945, during the final phase of the Battle of Luzon, the U.S. Army's 6th Infantry Division advanced into the Cagayan Valley along Highways 4 and 5. In the jungle and mountainous terrain, soldiers used M4 Sherman tanks as mobile cover, clearing the way with machine gun and 75mm cannon fire against snipers, fortified caves, and Japanese positions. The American forces faced the Shobu Group, commanded by General Tomoyuki Yamashita, as well as remnants of the Japanese 2nd Tank Division and other entrenched units. After intense fighting, from late June through August 1945, the 6th Division secured the valley, cut Japanese supply lines, and forced the remaining enemy forces to retreat into the mountains of northern Luzon.
