i’m currently a lube tech at an independent shop. i’ve already got a decent amount of tools. only doing tires and oil changes. cleaning up ect. what would be your advice on getting into a dealership without being stuck as a lube again.

I’m enrolled in Lincoln tech supposed to start classes in August for automotive, if I’m certified and trained right out of school It wouldn’t be impossible to find a job with my own lift I don’t think. How would I end up a lube tech right out of school if I am already trained above that

The first fifteen years suck. Big time. But once your tools are built up. You have enough experience to keep yourself out of trouble. And the drive to work for yourself in one way shape or form. Then you hit it big. Otherwise. Pick another trade.

good advise especially if you don't have money for tech school. don't get into debt for something you can get for free

Been in the dealership for more the 10 years. Hes absolutely right about the finding information. Going to school is great if you know youll do it for the rest of your life. But I didnt go and started out pretty much exactly as he described. I now do used cars and sidewalk for people who work at the dealership. Every day is an opportunity to learn on all car brands. I make around 70k before deductions without factoring side work. At year 2 as a lube techs I went to a few different industries and went back to automotive. 2 years high school automotive classes while working at a small independent shop to get started. At a dealership you get more opportunities for connections. At an independent shop you get more opportunities to learn on different makes. 🤝

In the USA, yeah. In Canada if you want to be an apprentice, you need a shop to sign you up.

When I was a kid, every tech said, don't be a mechanic. Never really got it. It's a fun job? After 15 years, yeah, I get it. I tell the kids the exact same thing.

100%. Think of your first jobs as paid training. Don’t even worry about getting paid yet.
