Autozone told the customer that the code was a thermostat. Turns out there was no antifreeze in it. But it was an Altima with a transmission death code too.

why does this bother shops so much?? no hassle, throw the parts on it, make the money, and make more money when they’re wrong or let them leave with 0 warranty and 0 stress on you. that 1 hour of diag that you lost isnt gonna pay all your bills…

As a service advisor of a very successful independent shop diag fees are such a scam. The only thing “diag” we ever charge for is AC for having to use and dispose of Freon, and draw issues and even at that it’s maybe 1-2 hours tops even if we spend a couple hours a day for 2-3 days looking at it. Majority of issues can get diagnosed by someone who actually knows what they’re doing well under an hour, and if it takes longer it takes longer but we can’t justify charging someone just to look at their vehicle especially when the repair cost ends up well above the value of the car. So many people have given the auto industry a bad name, diag fees, insane parts/labor markups, breaking something and telling the customer it was already broken and making them pay for it. I can go on and on lol, working in a shop that doesn’t charge a diag fee has led me to have the best customer experience I’ve had in any job ever including another 2 shops, and parts store lol.

I work at autozone but I always recommend a second opinion from a certified technician and a more professional scanner, I know what I’m talking about but I’m too young to be ASE so I work at autozone lol

I'd say 90% of the 1.5 and 2.3 short blocks and 2.0 long blocks I've done have new a duralast coil and new plugs.

I fixed cars all my life and at one time I did work at autozone I use to inform people what the check engine light was on for and use to tell them without the garage doing a diagnostic on it they might waste a lot of money and tell them everything that could be wrong to cause it

I told a customer that recently . 🤣. and then ill pull up potential 10 causes for that 1 code and show them why I wont throw parts on a car without a paid diag and no im not giving a discount just because.

scanner doesn't tell you what's wrong.it tells you which system is having issues.only a mechanic can diagnose ( key word here) what part of that system is failing 🤣

plugs would have been the first thing I would have checked and the condition of said plugs would have gone a long way and telling me what the deeper issue is is it filed out is it soaked with fuel is it clean step two compression test put a dollar bill to the tailpipe with it running tries to suck the dollar bill in You got valves not seating or burnt valves

The end of your statement is what you're just supposed to do for the customer so when it's still not right you can then say hey we can go through and actually diagnose this figure out your problem there's just going to be a fee on it and we can't reimburse you for your parts that you just got replaced
