i am brazilian. when my family visited Cuba as a kid, people had a really hard time understanding our portuguese, and we struggled a little with their spanish, but when we went to Chile, everyone understood us pretty well and we could get by using very little spanish cuz people seemed to understand us. I wonder if Chilean spanish *sounds* closer to brazilian portuguese than other versions of spanish.

Chilean here 🇨🇱. The depth you went into is far above the average language entuthiast around these parts, or even straight un linguists. Very well explained, your pronunciation was perfect, and it shows how apreciative you are about our dialect. If you wish to continue this, maybe get on the topic of how we speak fast due to a combination of: 1. Eliminating the space between words to treat them phonetically as a single one, to reach the intonational plateau of a sentence without it being too isolated. 2: Often eliminating D and S sounds at the end of words completely, or replacing them with a subtle H as to regulate breathing. Also, S sounds that are the second sound in a word. Espalda -> Ehpalda. And D sounds second to last. Pescado -> Pescao. We just eat letters all day so we don't run out of breath.

The funny thing for me will always be that we all know and learn the "correct" formal Spanish in school. We know it, we use it at work or situations like that. I travel often and can communicate perfectly and neutralize the way I speak if necessary. But what we are known for is our day to day dialect. that evolved this way and tbh I'm very fond and proud of it, and how it makes me so recognizable as Chilean when I meet new people around the world. People legit identify me as one within the minute of starting a conversation, and it always makes me happy.
