@thinkingcanine: Respect the dog, respect the growl. Some dogs are intolerant of hugs and handling and that’s ok. There are many reasons for this, but the bottom line is that it damages your relationship to harass them and stress them out, and your dog may be in pain and just desperately trying to communicate to you. Should all dogs be cool with hugs?
This dog is so nice! My dog did never have to growl at me because I can tell by the way he looks at me if he doesnt like something so I stop.

my dogs love physical affection. but sometimes they aren't in the mood for it. I just read the signs. if your dogs need space give it to them.

My dad has a GSD and I am one of his favorite people because I respect his boundaries. Oddly enough because he's comfortable with me, he wants more attention and doesn't respect MY boundaries 😂. But I don't mind. I love having a healthy relationship with dogd

My dog hates physical affection unless she wants it and it sucks but I listen to her, and use so many treats when I do have to handle her for grooming

Dogs should be able to be touched. I get they need space but in the real world they will come across things that will be touched.

I wonder if my dog sometimes dislikes my hugging and petting even though she doesn’t say anything. She’s practically a mute and the only non-verbal cues I get that are indicative are lip licks, looking away, or physically moving away from me when she doesn’t like something. But sometimes I wonder if she’s still uncomfortable even without showing any of those signs

yea...maybe we should listen to our dogs when they tell us they dont like something. Most dogs dont enjoy that sort of affection. Its a very human means of affection. My dog actually adores hugs, but my father's dont. So while I hug the crap out of my dog, I dont hug his. Why are people so comfortable with teasing their dogs and purposely making them uncomfortable? Dogs have boundaries too.

Take her to the vet and get her tested for lyme disease. Rule out pain. Otherwise please stop you are going to end up getting bitten and it will be bad for both you and her. No one thinks their dog will bite until it happens and she’s giving you soooo many signs she’s uncomfortable.

Sometimes dogs don’t like certain things cause of their personality and that’s okay. Growling is setting boundaries. If the boundaries aren’t harming others it’s okay for the dogs to have them.
