How do you use this strategy when there is a zero in the tens place and you have to regroup?

only works for loaded equations like this example. throw a zero in a ten spot and he'd be cooked

This only works if you don’t have to borrow from the group prior

This works because you can easily manipulate numbers. Teach the standard algorithm in the formative years, please. ... then this. For this strategy, reluctant learners would consistently struggle with knowing where to make the break in the numbers to solve "simpler" problems and also struggle with the mental math necessary to solve the problems. This takes TIME to teach. This is also a multiple step algorithm. This is not efficient for a young student. This leads to frustration and the belief that they are not good at math; a difficult hurdle to overcome.

I always tell my students that one of the coolest things about math is that you often can solve a problem many different ways and still arrive at the correct answer!

for those confused you break it down to small numbers that dont lead with 0. thats why its 3 digits in the middle. you start from the right side and once you encounter a 0 you put a break. then now you look for a non zero. you technically dont even need this because it can actually be solved in the head for most people. you just take a little longer.

It works for this one but if it had been 4,100,072-297,536 it wouldn’t haves Starting from left to right would have been the wrong way to go since 4-2 IS 2 but since some “borrowing” took place, it would have needed to be 3-2.

cool so instead of solving the whole you break the number down into smaller chunks, anything that doesn't borrow is solved immediately, and any number that is larger on the bottom gets grouped with the number ahead of it. it's just reframing not much different than traditional subtraction. I can see this helping struggling students

Do the games teach these things beforehand and then you play the games to get better in your program. I really want to ramp up my math skills!
