Rioters torched buildings, looted stores and battled police across France on Saturday as nationwide protests over living costs and struggling schools were overshadowed by violence. At least 1,200 people were arrested, and 150 police officers were injured. Looters targeted everything from Hermès and Louis Vuitton boutiques in Bordeaux to grocery stores, pharmacies and electronics shops. In Paris, masked groups disconnected security cameras before smashing storefront windows and stealing merchandise. Cars burned as police used tear gas and water cannons against groups throwing projectiles and fireworks. Historic landmarks were also attacked. Cars were lit on fire near Place de la Republique in Paris. In Limoges, rioters broke into the 19th-century city hall and set it ablaze, its roof to collapse. Lyon’s historic tourist office building burned down, while crowds stormed and vandalized Marseille’s city hall. The demonstrations followed weeks of student protests over teacher shortages and deteriorating school buildings. Unions and far left activists joined Saturday’s marches, broadening demands to include rising prices and inequality. Authorities estimated 550,000 participants nationwide; organizers put turnout at 800,000. Many initially marched peacefully. President Emmanuel Macron vowed that those responsible would be “prosecuted and punished,” accusing rioters of undermining institutions and preventing peaceful demonstrators from being heard.
