My daughter just told me she wants to go to prom. It’s literally 13 days away and I have -$20 in my bank account. This video has me boohooing ugly crying bc why tf did my husband have to decide to unexpectedly die 3 years ago and leave me to do this all alone??? 😭😭😭 I’m also pmsing so that may actually be most of why I’m having myself a pity party 😆🫠

I’ll never forget that my friends aunt (who acted like mine) took us prom dress shopping and I had such a small budget in comparison to my friend bc of my family’s situation, her aunt had me try on dresses way outside my budget “just to see what I liked” and I loved this dress that there was no way we could afford. We went to a cheaper shop for me after and I came up empty handed and sad. I came out to the car and she had purchased the dress from the first shop for me that I fell in love with bc “this is the only time you’ll get to go dress shopping like this until you get married” 🥹 I’ll never forget it.

My parents bought my dress from whatchamacallit and spent way more than the budget they had given me, I’ll never forget it. ❤️

Prom dress shopping was traumatic af as a foster kid. Foster parent bought their birth kid their dress but I had to save up for months for mine. Fortunately, it was missing its tag and the lady at the register charged me $70 for what I believe was a $340+ dress. I will never forget it. I love to live vicariously through others and their prom dress experiences though 😅

These stories always make me cry. My daughter was class of 2020 we bought her prom dress… two weeks later the world closed. Her dress is still in the bag in her closet untouched with a tags on it. and funny enough we bought it at whatchamacallit

I grew up with everything I needed but not a lot of extra money. My mom took me to davids bridal (don’t knock it, they have great prom options!) and I tried on literally everything that would fit me. My mom brought me this white dress with rhinestones on the top, a black belted sash, and these weird ruffles on the bottom. I hated it on the hanger and didn’t want to try it. I was also defeated bc I was struggling to find dresses that fit. The sales lady and mom talked me into trying it on and it fit perfectly. It was so flattering and I ended up loving it. I was worried we wouldn’t be able to afford it but it was on sale. Then the sales lady told us they were doing a promotion with scratch off sales tickets. That sweet woman went behind the counter and scratched off tickets until she found one that was 50%. She helped create a core memory and there are very few times I can think of where I felt more confident than I did on prom day that year. 12 years later and I still have the dress❤️

My daughter’s friends all come from very upper class Charlotte NC families and I am a divorced low income mom- we got hers off Poshmark for under $20 and her friends all consider her the most

when i was in HS, my family was struggling financially big time- we were asking family friends if anyone had old prom dresses in my size, but no one had any, so it wasn’t looking good. we randomly discovered a small locally owned boutique in my town that ran something called “The Fairy Godmother Program”- the shop owner took donations from old prom dresses, pageant dresses, bridesmaids dresses, even bridal shops would donate their old stock. this amazing woman had the entire basement of her boutique FILLED wall to wall with gorgeous dresses, and she’d take appointments with girls in need- no questions asked- and she’d legit have a whole dress fitting appointment where she’d talk to you and figure out what you like, pull all the options she had in your style and size, and she’d give you as much time as you needed to find your dream dress- THEN, she’d do any alterations necessary. and everything was completely free. this woman MADE my prom, i wore the most beautiful blue satin mermaid style gown- she tailored it to my height, it was PERFECT. I’ll never forget her 💕 we donated any formal dresses i ever wore after that to her

She will remember this and you are a great mom. My mom made me get a cheap dress and I didn’t really like it. I only went to one prom. Still makes me sad looking at the pictures.

Had my senior prom in 2013… my dress was $1,000 and I am still so thankful for my parents for even considering that dress for me. Luckily I was able to wear it a few more times for pageants

my senior year my mama paid 1000 + dollars on my prom dress. i had never been to prom and it was such a big deal for me. as a body conscious gal, we say thank you for mama’s who are “crazy” for paying that much. sometimes that one dress changes a girls imagination forever

My dress freshman year was 1200.00 sophomore year it was 1500.00 junior year 1300.00 and senior year hoco was 2700.00 (homecoming queen) and prom was 3500.00 and I loved every single dress so much! My daughter wore my senior hoco dress to her freshman hoco and she is going to senior prom and her dress was about 3100.00. When you love something you love it! And if you can do it then why not?! I was lucky enough to grow up comfortable I guess and my daughter is also lucky enough for that. And we give all of the dresses away for free to girls who need dresses when we’re done with it. The only ones I kept were my senior dresses hoping I would have a daughter haha!

I find it so odd when people are weird about talking about how things cost. Especially in a country where the less money you have the more you have to spend it and if we talked about these things more it might be better.

I wish they offered for prom/hoco dresses to be rented. My daughter is only a freshman, so we've not made it this far just yet! They do it for suits, granted I know it is probably easier with suits but still it could be made possible lol over 1000 for a dress my teen will wear once and knowing her will not have a sentimental attachment to it and will want to sell it afterwards lol

I swore I wasn’t gonna buy my daughter an expensive prom dress either, but she had her heart set on this Ashley Lauren blue dress, we drove 2 hours from Savannah to Dublin to get it and it was the last one there, in a size smaller than what she normally wears, I guess it was meant to be! It’s her Senior year and she’s never been to any other proms or ever asked for anything this expensive…….she’s lost 25 lbs since last summer and I just couldn’t tell her no🥹
