She created humans from the yellow earth, molding small clay figures and breathing life into them. Thus, humankind was born and began to flourish generation after generation, living in peace and joy. But one day, a fierce war broke out between the Fire God Zhurong and the Water God Gonggong. They fought from the heavens to the depths of the earth, shaking all realms with chaos. In the end, Zhurong triumphed. Enraged by his defeat, Gonggong struck the mighty Mount Buzhou, one of the pillars that held up the sky. The pillar collapsed, the sky tilted, and half of the heavens fell apart. A vast hole opened in the firmament—rivers from the celestial realm poured down endlessly, the earth cracked into countless fissures, mountains burned, and wild beasts roamed freely, devouring the helpless humans. The world descended into calamity. Moved by compassion, Nüwa vowed to save humankind. She climbed to Mount Tiantai, where she refined five-colored stones to mend the torn sky. Then she cut off the four legs of the giant sea turtle to support the heavens once more. After endless effort, she restored the world—the sky was repaired, the earth was leveled, floods receded, and the beasts were subdued. Peace returned to humankind. Yet, traces of the disaster remained: the sky still leaned slightly toward the northwest, causing the sun, moon, and stars to drift westward, while the earth tilted to the southeast, so all rivers flowed that way ever since.
