I'm not from the US but we have similar discussions about this in Germany. I'm on your side it makes sense to say that he's the nephew once removed, it makes no sense to say it's the cousin once removed because that would logically be the child of your mother's or father's cousin.

First cousin - share a set of grandparents. Second cousin - share a set of great grandparents. Third cousin - share a set of great great grandparents. And so on. Remove is the difference generation gaps. One generation older or younger is first removed. Two generations either direction is twice removed.

While going through my family tree, I wondered what I'd get if I typed in a random name in the relationship column. He was my 8th cousin 8 times removed 🤔 he was also apparently a doctor from Delaware who died in 1822. I'm not sure how I actually relate to him 😂 but he's on my dad's side. I can brag we have a doctor in the family. ...8 times removed.

I have an aunt (who's my dad's cousin) who's 8 years younger than I am. We just came to an agreement that I don't call her aunt (or tita, in our language) and she just calls me by my name and not in formalities used for elders.
