To clarify: the Montessori schools I attended not only required children to constantly be engaging in academic activity, but required all subjects to be covered as well. Again, the child can choose any method of learning the subject, I.e. abacus for first grade math instead of paper for a visual learner, or interesting word problems instead of timed math quizzes for a third grader who has trouble retaining numbers alone. The child can learn the subject by any means or method that they find most intriguing, as long as it is age appropriate.

so the Montessori school didn't teach you to follow rules. I get allowing the child to make decisions, but being taught to follow rules is important too

I’m a teacher one of my best teacher friends was a teacher at an MA public Montessori. It really didn’t work for a lot of kids. I think the data on Montessori has been severely effected by the fact that Montessori is typically attended by well off highly supported children. In the kindergarten level it’s great and there are elements that are fantastic but it can really fail some students.

i get this in theory but i think it depends on the kid bc i would have just done english classes all day and i would have never learned math beyond basic addition and subtraction 😭

I love the Montessori model for preschool, then there are certain skills people have to learn as children (literacy & numeracy) that may require more direction if certain children don't naturally go for them. Like if a child doesn't care to learn how to read and nobody makes them, it's going to be really hard when they're a teen/adult and suddenly realize why it is important.

thanks, and bc of this I wholeheartedly know that this model of education will not work with everyone, just as traditional models don't either. honestly I feel like there should be more models just as there are different schools, so parents and students can fit in a method that they'd fit in best with.

i agree that montessori school is a better model but i do think students need to have a baseline proficiency in all subjects, even ones that they hate and don't come as easy to them. also sometimes you have to do things that mean adults tell u to do

I fully get the benefits and everything, but how does this play into actual neurodevelopment of children? Like most of the reason we learn math and English all through highschool instead of just stopping once you know your basics is because it literally helps develop your brain and you will have better problem solving and critical thinking skills than if you never learnt it in the first place.

The issue with these systems is that they don't teach kids to adapt to situations that are not in their favour. Montessori at least requires touching on (and I do mean touching, I don't feel they require enough depth across the board) all subjects, but by letting kids always engage with material in the manner they wish they aren't learning to engage with things when that's not an option.

i was so angry when i learned about Montessori school when i was a senior in high school cause what do you mean that was an option the whole time. mind you i learned about it from my HIGH SCHOOL CALCULUS TEACHER who went through it. it is definitely an effective system. im curious how this experience would be for someone who wants to pursue a career which requires an intensive degree. I love what im studying, but if I hadn't gone to a standard school up to age 18, I would not be able to study for 15 hours a week on a topic I dont care about. I need to do that because even in my degree which im taking solely out of passion for the subject, I have to do things I hate. for hours. every day. or I will fail. (I hate biology psychology so much, idgaf about atomic-level neural functioning). the only reason that I can do this is my years of practice which I would not have gotten of my own accord.

I think this really stabs at the heart of "people wouldn't do anything if they didnt have to". im very sad Montessori wasn't the way i went through school. some of my close friends went through that and it sounds like it would have been so much better for me personally

i am so grateful i was in montessori from pre k-6, but it made public school a living hell for me. i was super ahead of everyone, and sitting at a desk all day felt like literal torture
