Yes the Philistines!! Palestine is just an English name. Philistines are actually Israel’s enemies before Christ. Even in David’s time.. yes David fought the philistine giant named Goliath.. so this is nothing new. This war has been going on for such a long time.

Also, when Herodotus named the land “Palaistine Syria” it was hundreds of years after the Philistines lived in the western region. So it was originally named after a group of people who didn’t live there anymore by a person who never stepped foot on the land he named.

Bronze/Iron Ages (c. 1200–539 BCE) The Philistines coexisted and sometimes clashed with Canaanite city-states and emerging Israelite kingdoms (Israel in the north, Judah in the south). Assyrian conquests (8th–7th centuries BCE) destroyed much of the region, followed by the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem and the First Temple in 587 BCE, with exiles from Judah. The Philistines gradually assimilated and disappeared as a distinct group by the 6th century BCE. Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman Periods (539 BCE–4th century CE) Persian rule (Yehud province) allowed Jewish return and Temple rebuilding. Alexander the Great’s conquest (333 BCE) brought Hellenistic influence under Ptolemaic and Seleucid rule. The Maccabean Revolt led to the independent Hasmonean Jewish kingdom (2nd–1st centuries BCE). Rome conquered the area in 63 BCE. After two major Jewish revolts—the Great Revolt (66–70 CE, destruction of the Second Temple) and the Bar Kokhba Revolt (132–135 CE)—Emperor Hadrian renamed the province Syria Palaestina to erase Jewish national ties and link it to the ancient Philistines. This marks the formal administrative birth of “Palestine” as a Roman provincial name.

I've been saying this for a while ,the closest descendants to current Palestinian Muslims would be from the Arabic empire that came to take over the region after the romans would be in 638 ad ( these also weren't Muslims as islam didn't exist on a wide scale)

The History of Palestine: From the Philistines to Today The region historically known as Palestine lies in the southern Levant, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. Its name originates directly from the Philistines (Peleset in ancient Egyptian texts), a non-Semitic people likely from the Aegean region who arrived as part of the “Sea Peoples” migrations around 1200 BCE during the Late Bronze Age collapse. They settled the coastal plain and established a confederation of five city-states (the Pentapolis): Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath. Egyptian records and later Greek writers like Herodotus (5th century BCE) referred to the broader coastal area as “Palaistinê,” which evolved into the name Palestine.

Byzantine Period (4th–7th centuries CE) Under Christian Roman (Byzantine) rule, the region was divided into Palaestina Prima, Secunda, and Tertia. Christianity became dominant; churches and monasteries proliferated, and Jerusalem gained prominence as a holy site. Jewish and Samaritan populations declined after revolts. Early Islamic Period (636–1099 CE) Arab Muslim armies conquered the region in 636–641 CE. It became the military district Jund Filastin under the Umayyad and later Abbasid, Fatimid, and Seljuk caliphates. Arabic became the dominant language, and Islam spread, though Christians and Jews remained as protected communities (dhimmis). The Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque were built in Jerusalem. Crusader, Ayyubid, and Mamluk Periods (1099–1516 CE) European Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099 and established the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Saladin (Ayyubid dynasty) retook it in 1187. Mamluk rule from Egypt followed (1291 onward), with fortifications and a declining population due to wars, plagues, and earthquakes. Ottoman Empire (1516–1918 CE) The Ottomans conquered the area in 1516. It was administered as sanjaks (districts) within larger provinces, often referred to informally as Filastin or Palestine in local and European usage. The population was mostly Arab (Muslim, Christian, and small Jewish communities) living in villages and towns. Brief Egyptian rule (1831–1840) and later Tanzimat reforms modernized administration. Exiled Jews returned in the late 19th century. Zion means Jerusalem btw ….
