Blizzzz96 :
Byzantine Period (4th–7th centuries CE)
Under Christian Roman (Byzantine) rule, the region was divided into Palaestina Prima, Secunda, and Tertia. Christianity became dominant; churches and monasteries proliferated, and Jerusalem gained prominence as a holy site. Jewish and Samaritan populations declined after revolts.
Early Islamic Period (636–1099 CE)
Arab Muslim armies conquered the region in 636–641 CE. It became the military district Jund Filastin under the Umayyad and later Abbasid, Fatimid, and Seljuk caliphates. Arabic became the dominant language, and Islam spread, though Christians and Jews remained as protected communities (dhimmis). The Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque were built in Jerusalem.
Crusader, Ayyubid, and Mamluk Periods (1099–1516 CE)
European Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099 and established the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Saladin (Ayyubid dynasty) retook it in 1187. Mamluk rule from Egypt followed (1291 onward), with fortifications and a declining population due to wars, plagues, and earthquakes.
Ottoman Empire (1516–1918 CE)
The Ottomans conquered the area in 1516. It was administered as sanjaks (districts) within larger provinces, often referred to informally as Filastin or Palestine in local and European usage. The population was mostly Arab (Muslim, Christian, and small Jewish communities) living in villages and towns. Brief Egyptian rule (1831–1840) and later Tanzimat reforms modernized administration. Exiled Jews returned in the late 19th century. Zion means Jerusalem btw ….
