@historishhh: 🇵🇭 The Filipino Scientist Who Turned Coconut and Sugarcane Into Fuel Did you know that a Filipino scientist once showed how coconut and sugarcane could be turned into fuel? Born in Balanga, Bataan in 1908, he grew up interested in science and how natural resources could help people. He later studied chemistry at the University of the Philippines, earning his degree in 1930. After graduating, he began teaching and researching at the University of the Philippines College of Agriculture, now known as the University of the Philippines Los Baños. He later received a government scholarship to study in the United States, where he earned a PhD in biochemistry. His research showed that cassava could be fermented to produce alcohol, proving that crops could also produce energy. When he returned to the Philippines, he focused on how local crops could help meet the country’s energy needs. During the 1940s, he studied coconut and sugarcane and showed that oils and sugars from these crops could be converted into renewable fuel. His work helped demonstrate that crops grown in the Philippines could also support energy production. Years later, the country passed a law requiring biofuels to be blended with gasoline and diesel.
