@smart_keltie: Did you know that starfish aren’t actually fish? These fascinating creatures, also known as sea stars, are echinoderms—a group of marine animals that includes sea urchins and sand dollars. There are 2,000 species of sea stars living in all the world’s ocean. From sunny, colorful coral reefs to the cold and dark parts of the seafloor, their individual suction-cup-like feet work together to move them wherever they need to go. They can survive up to 35 years in the wild, partly due to their incredible ability to regenerate lost limbs. Though their bony, calcified skin and ability to camouflage protect them from most predators, if they ever find themselves missing an arm, they can grow one back in a matter of months. Some species can even grow an entirely new sea star from just a portion of a severed limb.
