Janelle Liddle Jorde :
No I SCREAMED when she appeared! Misty is so important culturally as one of the most successful and iconic black ballerinas, AND she’s retired, and I think had hip replacement recently. Her return to the stage, in this context, was immediate tears for me!

it is extra impressive because misty copeland had double hip replacement in december and this was her first performance since!! and i believe she was the first black woman to dance the lead in firebird, which is the costume/ballet she is representing in her costume and performance!!

She also wore part of the Firebird costume from The Dance Theater of Harlem's version of the ballet....iconic.

to be fair, i think the dancer in the movie was more a contemporary dancer given the fluidity and full body movements, but nevertheless there WAS a dancer

it's also iconic because it pays homage to one of her breakout roles and the costume is historic!

This performance was as jaw dropping-ly stunning as the actual scene in the movie was.

You’re right. I have def loved Misty since forever but the only thought I had was about how she proved that people DO in fact still care about ballet & about how wrong his statement was, I didn’t even consider a direct tie-in to the movie. Very good point, thanks 🙏

As a historian and a dancer I cried during that scene in the movie and I cried watching her dance there. ❤️😭

So when watching it, I did not think that. But I get what you’re saying the reason I did not think that was because I knew she was in the scene and so I knew they were re-creating the scene. I saw this all the irony that it is still relevant and look it was actually in the most popular movie of last year but what a great point you’re making.
