Sadly, this kind of problem is related to the sensor probably, then... probably is death. I use regular rechargeable batteries fine with cameras from 1999 to 2005, rechargeable lithium AA is the best can you use for digicam.

check the base battery prongs they get weak over time pull them up a little and retry with strong alkaline batteries

i had the same nikon camera and it randomly stopped working because it had a "lens error"??? and no matter what i did it still had that error- even after taking it to the camera mechanics or whatever they couldn't fix it

Panasonic Eneloops are 1.2v while typically alkaline are 1.5v. Try with non-rechargeables

Yeah I stopped using rechargeable AAs to test, as most are 1.2v and those cameras require 1.5v alkaline batteries. Test it with regular alkaline batteries and I bet it will work!
